Selecting the Right Oil Seals for your Application

Post 1 of 6

Oil seals, also known as rotary shaft seals or lip seals, are an integral part in any rotating and moving part assembly. Its main function is to retain the bearing lubricant of the rotating shaft while preventing leakage or ingress of dust, dirt, water or any other contaminants, thus helping to minimize damage and premature failure of the bearing and other components in equipments.
Oil seals come in a vast range of designs, sizes and materials and are used throughout many industries in Dubai for a variety of different applications which include automotive and engine construction as well as machine and equipment building. Although ready-made oil seals that conform to international standards are readily available in the market, the majority of them are manufactured to suit particular applications.

Types of oil seal materials

The selection of sealing ring material is determined by the interaction of the contact media, the operating temperature and its mechanical characteristics. Generally, oil seals are made from elastomer materials. Some of the widely used elastomers include nitrile, viton, silicone and polyacrylate. Nitrile is one of the most commonly used elastomer due to its high resistance to petroleum based oils and fuels, silicone greases, hydraulic fluids, water and alkali solutions. Viton is one other elastomer that is highly used. Its high resistance to abrasion and chemical attack and its ability to withstand high temperatures in applications makes it a preferred elastomer material used in making oil seals.

Factors to consider while selecting oil seals in Dubai

As oil seals or rotary shaft seals can be found in any equipment with a rotating shaft, it must be designed in such a way as to be able to withstand the critical requirements of that particular application. Wrong selection of seals, poor installation and inaccurate application usage can be some of the causes in reducing the operating life of the bearings. It is therefore very necessary to carefully evaluate the conditions for it to work efficiently and prevent equipment failure. Selection of the seal should be carried out only after taking these factors into consideration. They include:
➢ Concentricity
➢ Internal Pressure
➢ Operating Speed
➢ Seal Size
➢ Shaft Surface
➢ Shaft Hardness
➢ Temperature
➢ Lubricant Type
➢ Lubricant Levels
➢ Lip Materials
To get optimum performance from oil seals all the above factors must be considered. By employing technical professionals experienced in sealing systems in Dubai, you can get professional help in choosing the correct oil seal that is best suited for the application.
